Overtime and shift hours calculator

Type when each shift starts and ends, and the break. The calculator adds up your week in hours and minutes and in decimal hours, the way payroll and time cards want them, and shows the overtime past 40 hours. A night shift from 10 PM to 6 AM counts 8 hours.

How to calculate hours worked

  1. Type each day's start and end. 9, 9am, 9:30 PM and 21:30 all work. A shift that ends after midnight counts until the next morning.
  2. Type the unpaid break in minutes. It comes off the day's hours: 9:00 AM to 5:30 PM with a 30 minute break is 8:00 hours.
  3. Read the week's total in hours and minutes, and in decimal hours for payroll. 7 hours 20 minutes is 7.33, since 20 minutes is a third of an hour.

Questions

When does overtime start in the US?
Under the federal Fair Labor Standards Act, after 40 hours worked in a workweek, paid at least one and a half times the regular rate (time and a half). The FLSA has no daily overtime, but some states do: California pays 1.5 times past 8 hours in a day and double past 12. Set the daily limit to 8 to count it. Exempt salaried jobs have no overtime.
Do I have to take a break?
Federal law requires none. Short breaks of 5 to 20 minutes, when given, count as paid work time, and a real meal break of 30 minutes or more can be unpaid. Some states require one: California gives a 30 minute meal break to anyone working more than 5 hours. Type only unpaid breaks in the Break column.
Is there a limit on hours worked in a day?
Not for adults under federal law: an employer can schedule any number of hours as long as overtime is paid. Some jobs have their own limits, like truck drivers and pilots, and minors have strict ones. This is a calculator, not legal advice: check your state's rules and your contract.
How does it count a night shift?
An end time earlier than the start is the next morning: 10 PM to 6 AM is 8 hours. Set a night window, say 10 PM to 6 AM, and it also counts how many of your hours fall in it, and how many fall on Sunday, for jobs that pay a night or weekend differential. The break is spread evenly over the shift, since the calculator does not know when you took it.
How do I turn hours and minutes into decimal hours?
Divide the minutes by 60 and add them to the hours. 7:45 is 7 + 45/60, so 7.75. The calculator shows both for each day and for the week, rounded to the hundredth.
Is my week saved?
Yes, in your browser only. Nothing you type leaves your computer, and it is still there when you come back. Reset clears it.
