How it works
- Type the names in the order people take turns, or paste a list. Drag a name by its handle to change who goes first.
- Pick how long a turn lasts: a day, a week or two weeks, and how many people are on at once. Day turns can skip the weekend.
- Print it, download a calendar file for everyone or one for each person, copy it as a spreadsheet, or paste it in Slack.
What people use it for
Who is on call this week, a team rota for the support inbox, the front desk, code review duty, the Monday standup or the weekly report. At home it makes a chore chart too.
Instead of an on call schedule template
A spreadsheet template stays empty until someone copies the names down every week, and it is wrong from the first swap. Here the order is all you type: every turn after it follows, and the counts next to each name show who has done more.
Questions
- How does an on call rotation work?
Each person is on call for a turn, a day or a week, then hands over to the next person in the order. After the last one, the first starts again. With two people per turn, two are on call at once and the next pair takes over.
- How do I keep it fair?
Look at the turns and days next to each name. With 4 people over 12 weeks, everyone gets 3 weeks. When it does not divide evenly, the people at the top of the order get one more turn, so drag names to pick who that is.
- Can I add it to Google Calendar or Outlook?
Yes. Everyone's calendar file downloads every turn of the next year as all day events. The calendar button next to a name gives that person's turns only. Google Calendar, Outlook and Apple Calendar import both.
- Can the rotation skip weekends?
Yes, with turns of a day: pick the days that count, Monday to Friday for example. Week and two week turns hand over on the weekday the rotation starts.
- Is it free, and where is it saved?
It is free, with no account and no ads. What you type stays in this browser until you change it. To share it with a link, open it on the free team calendar.
- Can people get a reminder before their turn?
That is what TurnShift does in Slack: the rotation runs by itself, each person gets a message before their turn, and the channel sees who is on. It has a 14-day free trial.
