Shift patterns

Pitman schedule

Also called the Pitman shift

The Pitman schedule covers every hour of the week with four crews on 12 hour shifts. Two crews work days and two work nights, each in the same 14 day pattern: 2 on, 2 off, 3 on, 2 off, 2 on, 3 off. Every crew works 7 shifts every two weeks, 42 hours a week on average, with every other weekend off.

One cycle

• Crew A, days: Monday and Tuesday, then Friday to Sunday, then Wednesday and Thursday of week 2
• Crew B, days: the days crew A is off
• Crews C and D: the same two patterns on nights

Questions

Do people on a Pitman schedule work the same days every week?

No. The days change from one week to the next and come back every two weeks, so send everyone the calendar's link.

Can I start the cycle on another day?

Yes. Open any shift, change its day, and every shift of that series moves with it.
